CHALLENGE

The Durham Bulls Athletic Park, though considered a historical landmark of the game, was in much need of an audio system renovation. Clarity, coverage and echoes were all issues.

After being led to them by BOSE, AVCON presented the Bulls with two ideas: their unique
design/build model and a guarantee of success. Partnering with BOSE, they bolstered this
rock-solid promise by presenting a simulation model of their plans using the BOSE Auditioner.
This helped the client set accurate expectations and made for a quick turnaround for design and technology approvals.

SOLUTION

Facing a two-week window before Opening Day (with inclement weather throughout), AVCON worked to install a sound system that addressed the unique needs and challenges of the ballpark.

The final product featured 39 BOSE full-range loudspeakers, a digital signal processor,
and a control center with two four-channel output cards. This core system was supported by
six 1000-watt power amplifiers with another six 300-watt power amplifiers. To minimize echo amongst the tall buildings of downtown Durham, the design also included long-throw loudspeakers aimed precisely at the Diamond View area of the ballpark.

The system was complete and ready to thrill fans on Opening Day. Bulls executives praise the innovations as a ‘new level of sound experience’ in baseball. That’s the kind of ‘feedback’ you love from an audio system.
