CHALLENGEFor more than 70 years, worship at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church has been lifted by the inspiring music of the church’s pipe organ. Those years have taken a toll on the sound quality of the instrument, though, prompting a search for its replacement. This acquisition became a catalyst for a number of potential enhancements to the worship experience. Many discussions ensued about acoustics, lighting, and AV, and a new vision was created for renovating not only the sanctuary but also the fellowship hall. However, one key requirement for the project was to preserve the integrity of this traditional sanctuary, while seamlessly integrating new technology throughout, so as not to detract from the room’s true focus. The planning committee selected AVCON to spearhead the audio, visual, and lighting elements of this ambitious upfitting. SOLUTIONThe first task was to understand the congregation’s needs and the committee’s expectations. Many talks and walks through the facility enabled AVCON to recommend a plan that addressed a spectrum of needs – a single, integrated AV control booth to manage audio, video, and lighting in both the sanctuary and fellowship hall, the subtle placement of speakers enabling members of all ages to hear well, flexible lighting solutions to accentuate the chancel, pulpit or back of the church as needed, the addition of monitors outside the sanctuary and parlor for real-time viewing – perfect for weddings and baptisms – and simulcast capabilities for overflow situations. The AVCON team first readied the fellowship hall to accommodate Sunday services while the main sanctuary was being renovated. A new projection system was installed, along with new sound and lighting equipment. The room, which serves as a conference facility during the week, was outfitted with automated technology to “combine” and “uncombine” the room dividers. Within two months, the work was complete. AVCON turned its focus to the sanctuary, working closely with the general contractor, planning committee, and consultant. The construction had a number of implementation challenges, like needing to unobtrusively run cable from the sanctuary to the fellowship hall. AVCON found creative and smart engineering solutions to each challenge – without impacting the schedule. The results? Improved audio and lighting and an aesthetically pleasing environment took worship at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church to an inspiring new level of engagement, worship, and quality. That’s success guaranteed. |
